The Best Beaches of Los Cabos and Seashell Floats to Match!

Seashell floats 16
Tucked away in the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula lies Los Cabos, well-known for its beautiful sprawling beaches. It is an excellent getaway if you’re looking to do some swimming in its free and open waters. However, underneath its picturesque demeanor, however, lies deadly ocean conditions that could prove fatal to the uninformed beach-goer. Here, we give you the down-low on which beaches in Los Cabos are safe for swimming, how to get there and what to look out for!

Medano Beach (Playa Medano)

Seashell floats 17
Medano Beach, otherwise known as Playa Medano to the locals, is our first stop on this list. Medano Beach is famous for its soft, white sands and also provides a wealth of excellent swimming conditions. However, its popularity also brings the hustle and bustle of the tourist trade with it. You would be hard-pressed to miss the comings and goings of those looking for a good time on a party boat. Various vendors in the area will be looking to sell you their goods and services, ranging from simple souvenirs to boat tours. Parking here will be difficult, and some walking may be required.

Chileno Beach (Playa El Chileno)

Chileno Beach’s status as one of the only Blue Flag beaches presents you with exactly what you would expect: beautifully calm and clear waters, and fine sand that almost seems to caress your feet. A sure validation that the Blue Flag status of high environmental and quality standards was not misplaced. It also provides many family-friendly facilities and services, making it an ideal spot for bringing your little ones. Safe swimming areas are clearly demarcated and lifeguards are present until sunset. There are even wheelchair-friendly ramps should you require them. Be prepared to bring your own refreshments here due to the lack of nearby amenities. On the upside, this means fewer people on the beach as well, and there is also free parking nearby.

Water sports such as kayaking and snorkeling are available, but if you’re just here to have a fuss-free, relaxing vacation without any sort of increase in heart rate, we suggest lying on a float. Admiring the stunning coastline on the calm waters atop a Giant Pearly Pink Shell Float Lounger is the superior way of enjoying the beach.

Santa Maria Bay (Bahia Santa Maria)

Santa Maria Bay is Chileno Beach’s less developed cousin and easily accessible by car or ride-sharing. Sitting about 3 miles (5km) south of Chileno Beach, Santa Maria Bay provides the same pristine waters that make it perfect for swimming without being interrupted by common tourist activities. The Montage Los Cabos serves as the sole resort in the area and serves food and drink, albeit at rather steep prices. Do remember to bring your own towel and umbrella here as well! Bathrooms and changing rooms are readily available and parking is easy to find in the designated parking area, which is accompanied by a footpath that leads straight to the beach.

Palmilla Beach (Playa Palmilla)

Heading up north along Los Cabos will bring you to Palmilla Beach, a prime beach for swimming if you happen to be in the nearby San Jose del Cabo. The beach is long, clean and sandy, with gorgeous waters to boot. It sits beside the One & Only Palmilla but the beach itself is open to the public. It also has convenient facilities such as bathrooms and showers, as well as lifeguards present to oversee activities on the beach.

Do be sure to take note of water conditions by checking the flag displayed at the beach, as the water here isn’t as tame as that of Medano or Santa Maria. A red flag usually means swimming would be best avoided.

Puerto Los Cabos

One of the hidden gems tucked away in San Jose del Cabo is Puerto Los Cabos, which contains one of the few swimmable beaches in the city. To get here, simply go east past the San Jose Estuary from downtown San Jose. Apart from the beach, you can find hotels, resorts, several restaurants, a marina, and even a sculpture garden. While access to the beach club area is exclusive to paying customers, there is ample space at the public beach that lies west of the beach club. The beach might not be the most impressive or eye-catching, but if you’re looking for a simple and fun time swimming, then make sure to drop by Puerto Los Cabos.

Lover’s Beach

One of the standout beaches of Los Cabos is Lover’s Beach. Its jaw-dropping vistas and perfect backdrops have made it one of the most-visited beaches in Los Cabos. Getting to Lover’s Beach is restricted to transport via water taxi, which can be found in the marina in Cabo San Lucas and takes about five to ten minutes per trip. On the beach, one can find water sports, food and drinks aplenty. Be sure not to miss out on a photo with the impressive Land’s End in the background for that perfect Instagram post. While frolicking in the water here is generally safe, be sure to stay within the confines of Lover’s Beach. The nearby (and aptly named) Divorce Beach has extremely dangerous conditions, so do look out and be aware.

Costa Azul

Last but not least is Costa Azul, a premiere beach that caters mainly surfers and strong swimmers. If you do decide to swim here, do note that it’s not always safe to do so. Make sure to check with the locals or surfers to ensure that the conditions that day are conducive. If you feel like having a more relaxing time, watching the surfers tackle the waves here is an option to consider as well. If you’re here in June, head over to the Zippers or La Roca section of the beach to catch world-class surfers in action for the Los Cabos Open of Surf. There are some boutique hotels near the beach, although that forms about the extent of facilities for Costa Azul.
