Can You Really Visit Notre-Dame Cathedral Before It’s Reopened?

Because of the Notre-Dame fire which took place on 15 April 2019, just before 18:50 CEST the place is not available for visits for an undisclosed time.

Since then French Billionaires on the likes of Bernard Arnault who is the founder of LVMH Group and Bettencourt Meyers family who controls L’Oreal pledged a combined €500 million ($565 million). While The Pinault Family who controls conglomerate Kering has pledged €100 million ($113 million).

Even though the fundraiser has gone well, the time that it will be opened for visits is not public yet (rumors are from 5 to 10 years for complete restoration).

Supringsignly there are still some ways you can pay a “visit” to the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Virtually

  1. One way is by Playing Assassin’s Creed Unity which is a game developed by a French company that recently became free just for the reason of visiting the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Before you get your hopes down as this is is not what you expected, you should know that the game developers have spent around 2 years just building the Cathedral so it can look as real as possible.  Here is a video by BBC that shows how it will look and some words by the developer.

The French-Company Ubisoft which developed the game has also pledged €500,000 ($565,000) for the reconstruction of the Cathedral.

  1. Another way is by viewing it on Google Earth VR which is offered for free by Oculus Rift and  SteamVR.

Here is a video that shows how it will look like.

After you download one of the aforementioned programs, just click on the search icon at the bottom. Just search Notre-Dame and select it.

3. If you don’t want to install anything, then the easiest alternative is by watching it through Google Maps.
