Pool Ring Floats 25
Ah, Cancun… the quintessential destination for a Mexican beach getaway. The rolling white sands, crystal clear waters, and endless blue skies are the stuff that dreams are made of. But sometimes, we want more than just the beach. Lying under the sun will no doubt result in some boredom and a bad sunburn, and some of us are just a little more adrenaline-seeking. If you’re headed to Cancun this summer, here are five super fun activities you can do in Cancun that don’t involve lying on a beach sun tanning. The Yucatan Peninsula, on which Cancun lies, is a vast coastal region full of spectacular landscapes, exotic wildlife, dreamy colonial towns, and mystical Mayan ruins. Of course, Cancun is the most popular tourist spot since it caters so well, with its swanky resorts and wild nightlife. But if you’re looking to have a different, more enriching experience in Cancun, there is a wide world out there for you to explore. Here are five of the best water-related activities you can do in Cancun, from swimming in underground rivers and caves to snorkeling with marine animals.

Swim in the underground rivers of Xcaret

The Yucatan Peninsula is home of one of the world’s most extensive underground river networks. The Xcaret Park is home to three beautiful rivers perfect for swimming. Hidden deep within the lush green Mayan jungles is this underwater paradise at your fingertips (or snorkel?) for your adventuring. The water is aquamarine, crystal clear and slow-moving, making it a safe and ideal location to swim. You’ll get to swim through unique rock formations and have a glimpse of fossil fuels from the days of dinosaurs. If you have young children, the Manatee River is the safest as it has fewer currents.

Take a Catamaran Cruise

If you want to relax minus the sand in your eyes, hair, and shoes, try a cruise! You’ll get to enjoy the sights of Cancun from the comfort of a boat, and many cruises also include activities like snorkeling and swimming. If you want something romantic, some companies also do dinner cruises that provide top-notch food with a view! There is a huge range of cruises you can choose from, depending on what you feel like doing or seeing. You can opt for a Sightseeing-Snorkeling-Dancing Cruise, an Adult Only Catamaran Cruise with an open bar, or one that takes you out to see the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, and more! You can also decide if you want a private tour or one that is in a larger group.

Go Snorkeling

Snorkeling is one of Cancun’s more popular water activities thanks to the pristine waters and the Great Mayan Reef that is teeming with all sorts of marine wildlife. Punta Nizuc is a particularly good location to explore the rich underwater world that Cancun has to offer. You can book tours from USD$47 that will take you on a boat out to the reef, and the price includes rental equipment too! If you’ve got kids, and they’re not exactly the most confident swimmers yet, ring floats are a great way to keep them safe but also allow them to swim freely.

Explore the Cenotes

Mexico is full of incredible natural landscapes, and the Cenotes are no exception. These stunning underground caverns are filled with pools of sparkling aquamarine water that is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. These caves held special mysticism for the ancient Mayans who used them as locations for rituals and sacrifices. While there are no particularly good cenotes in Cancun itself, there are many beautiful ones nearby which are worth taking a day trip or tour to see. The surrounding regions of Valladolid, the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza, Merida and Uxmal are all great locations to see these amazing natural wonders. Ik Kil is one of the most popular spots and is near Chichen Itza and Valladolid.
